As the topic says, I don't know where to put this.
Things could be an awful lot worse but those of you who pray, please do so, for the speedy recovery of my son ( aged 40!!)
He and the Family started their holiday on Saturday at a campsite in Sarlat, France. Yesterday he and a friend went
out for a cycle ride. He ended up in a ditch, 4 feet down. Ugh. He has broken collar bone and maybe shoulder
and several broken ribs. They punctured his lung so he has a chest drain and will be in hospital for at least 5 days.
His wife is distraught. I fell SOOO helpless and keep bursting into tears when I try to talk to anyone, thats partly why I am
blurting this out 'cus I need to get things off my mind. Neither of them speak French and no-one at the hospital speak enough
English. I have spoken to the holiday organisers and they immediately got in touch to the courier who knows the situation and
has offered to translate. They were very understanding and returned my call within 10 minutes. Thank goodness for mobile
phones, we couldn't manage this without them!

Oh gosh I've gone on a lot, now expecting a flare from stress. Anne

Oh Anne, I don`t know what to say - you must be so anxious, and feel so helpless, and I wish there was something I could do to help. It doesn`t matter whether our kids are 4 or 44, they are still our children, and if anything, the worries multiply.

I know the Sarlat area well, having had lots of family camping holidays there in the past - the medical facilities are really first class, and although the language may be a barrier, rest assured French medics are good, so your son will be well looked after. His poor wife must feel so lonely and worried, so I hope the couriers rally round - we needed help after an accident when with Canvas holidays and the couriers were really good.

I know it`s easy to say, but please try not to bring on a flare - your daughter-in-law is just at the other end of a phone : as you say, God bless mobile phones and whoever invented them! It will be a stressful time for you all - might it be worth talking to your GP about the situation? He might be able to help you, though if you are like me you won`t rest until your son is home again and safely over his injuries. What an awful thing to happen on the very first day, poor souls.

We never really stop worrying about them, do we? My youngest son, who is 37, takes his wife & two little boys - our gorgeous grandsons - to France in the car every summer, and I don`t have a minute`s peace until I know they`re all OK. At present, my oldest son, who is 39, is kayaking round the west of Scotland - no mobile signal of course! - and I will be so pleased when he`s back, especially as the weather up there doesn`t look too good.

Is there anyone you know who can speak any French? Anyone at a local school or somewhere? My son - the kayaker - is a teacher of French & German, would you believe, which is why I wondered if there was someone you could go to if you wanted to speak to the hospital staff.

I`m glad you posted - it doesn`t matter where you put your post as long as you get some support - feel free to ask NRAS for my email address if you want to "chat" or get things off your chest. I`ll say my prayers tonight for you all, and hope you get some better news very soon.

Do take care,

Kathleen xx

PS Please look after yourself!

Thanks Kathleen.
By mistake I phoned him tonight. I was trying to ring his wife and my fat fingers touched the wrong bit!!
He sounded down but apparently he's eating and drinking well so hopefully he will be off the drip soon and
get the chest drain out and then should be able to go back to the campsite. He is a stickler for wearing his
helmet and I think that prevented head injuries but everywhere seems to hurt. I got through to his wife,
she sounds more calm. Thanks again, Anne

Hi Anne,

I`m glad you`ve been able to speak to your son - it`s good that he`s eating and drinking well : always a good sign! And I`m also glad your daughter-in-law is calmer too - such a bad start to their holiday.

Cycle helmets are vital these days, I think - so much traffic on the roads these days, so very wise of your son to wear his.

Hope everything works out well,

Kathleen x

Update,
The Family are coming home but not together. Ian will be flown home in air ambulance when French give all clear for
travel. He will hoefully go to local hospital. He still has a chest drain in but it seems that is a precaution as if "they" took
it out he wouldn't be able to fly for 7 to 10 days. One of his brothers is flying out today to help bring wife, daughter
and car back. Fortunately the other son waas already on planned holiday to Medway towns with their 2 children as both lots of
"old's" live here, and they have given us distractions. 7 and 4 year old have been a blessing.. In all we have been
incredibly lucky that it wasn't worse. It will be better when I can see him and assess for myself. As someone said many
years ago, once a nurse always a nurse. That was in the good old days of "proper" training. (shoot her down in flames)
Can't wait for tomorrow or Tuesday or sometime soon Anne

Sorry for mistakes. I did "proof" read it but I'm not with it at present. Thank goodness for delete button.
I pick up nearest gadget and have to really concentrate on phone, tv controller, landline and even computer to
get response I want. Anne

Sorry you have been so worried. Sad It is horrible being in a different country when injured
Such as your son.

So glad things are a bit easier.

Try not to worry although that is easy for me to say.

Rose. Smile

Hi Anne,

I`m glad they`re coming home, and you will feel much better when you can see them all.

Grandchildren are a wonderful distraction!

Love, Kathleen x

Good News,
My son is being flown back to Biggin Hill on Sunday and land ambulance to his home.
Then he is in the care of his GP.
Phew. What a nightmare it's been. He can now stand for a short time without too much
discomfort.
We go to the Isle of Wight on Monday for a week so won't be an interfering Mother!!
Just on the phone. Thank you for all the support you have given me.

In the end he went to local hospital. They repeated all the Xrays etc. as they couldn't understand the French!!! A further op. was necessary to both shoulders (as predicted).
He was sent home when nearly ready because of the Sheppey Crossing accident and we (Medway ) are the nearest hospital and the Police entered a Major Incident so beds were cleared in
a hurry, and all routine ops. were cancelled. He is slowly getting better and hopes to be back at school before half term. They have got a supply teacher in at present.

Thanks for all your support, it so far hasn't caused me to flare but I am taking care and resting as much as possible. The sunshine on the Isle of Wight was just what we ordered but could
have avoided the hassle after the Bestival traffic which had priority over everything else onMonday. well done to ferry companies.
We didn't get home till 11pm instead of around 5pm which we usually aim for. Anne

Gosh re-reading this I didn't realise quite what a mess I was in. Thank you to everyone.
The up to date news is that Ian is back at school albeit very part time. Next week he will do more hours and then half term. He has been
very good with his physio and it is showing dividends.
I go in to have my elbow done on Friday under the same consultant as Ian. Hope that is a good omen
